As a modern dance piece, I wanted to create an environment for the dancers to inhabit. The piece began with an odd, mysterious atmosphere that spoke to secret rituals deep in the woods. I used dim lighting and heavy texture to allow the dancers to move in and out of the shadows. Then, with an abrupt shift, the piece becomes more ritualistic and driving, shifting to brighter lights and more emphasis on form. As the piece progresses,  the dark clothing is stripped away to reveal the color underneath, much like a butterfly breaking free of its cocoon.

This piece was a traditional ballet with 3 movements. I spoke with the choreographer about the work reflecting both the seasons changing, as well as the course of a single night. I based the first movement in late evening in summer so warm tones on the dancers set against the cool evening sky.

The second movement was styled after a wintery moonlit night in a statue garden. During this movement, there were many frozen dancers, so I chose to sculpt them while still highlighting the soloists. The final movement was just after sunrise, displaying the energy and warmth of a new dawn of spring.
